This usage is originally from the military, where troops (after much training and practice) were brought to the field (or battlefield) to demonstrate their tactics and were watched by high-ranking officers and dignitaries. It was a brilliant and noisy display with plenty of dashing movement.
Current Trend - To have some work outside the office / comfort zone.
Usage - I will not be able to review the document tomorrow. I have a field-day in the market. I will be in office back in the next week. I will review the document then.
Alternative Trend - To enjoy (often at the expense of others)
Usage - We are going to have a field day this Sunday. With a lot of sports, food and fun - all funded by our local Rotary Club chapter.
